The highly anticipated Jamshedpur Book Fair will return to the Rabindra Bhawan grounds from November 15 to 24, marking its 38th edition. Hosted by the Tagore Society, this special annual event unites students, book enthusiasts, and literary enthusiasts for a 10-day festival centered around books, education, and cultural exchange.

This 2024 book fair will be initiated by the Vice-Chancellor of Jamshedpur Women’s University, Dr. Anjila Gupta who will serve as the chief guest. At the same time, Rituraj Sinha, the MD of Tata Steel Utilities & Infrastructure Services Ltd., will be the guest of recognition. With seventy stalls exhibiting books across various fields, genres, and languages, the fair promises a dynamic literary experience for visitors.

During a press conference, Ashis Choudhury, General Secretary of the Tagore Society, underscored the collaborative effort that brings the book fair to fruition each year. “Although the Tagore Society organizes the fair, it's the shared enthusiasm from the community, local businesses, and literary organizations that contribute to the event's success,” he stated.

Ashish Choudhury, General Secretary of the Tagore Society, highlighted the significant involvement of prominent publishers and distributors from India and overseas. The event featured stalls from cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Patna, along with international publishing houses.

The selection of books will cover a various collection of languages, including Hindi, English, Bengali, Urdu, Gurumukhi, and regional idioms such as Santhali, Ho, and Kurmali, enabling readers to explore literature in their mother tongues and expand their linguistic understanding. “In a time when digital and social media are prevalent in our daily lives, books remain a vital source of genuine and thorough knowledge,” Choudhury noted, underscoring the unique importance that books retain in a media-saturated world. “Books embody a rich heritage, spanning from ancient palm leaf texts to modern printed works. Engaging with literature has the ability to enhance lives and broaden perspectives.

The Jamshedpur Book Fair, which started on a small scale, has significantly expanded over the years, drawing thousands of visitors daily, from aspiring writers to passionate readers. Choudhury mentioned that this year's fair will include a variety of related activities, such as seminars, book launches, and literary discussions. He issued a special invitation to the youth, encouraging them to temporarily set aside their digital devices and rekindle their reading habits, a pursuit he described as “truly beneficial for broadening knowledge.”

Corporate sponsors, educational institutions, and libraries were invited to support the fair by financing the acquisition of books across diverse subjects, promoting a more robust reading culture in Jamshedpur.

Dr. H.S. Paul, president of the Tagore Society, was present at the press conference, along with committee members Achintam Gupta, P.S. Sen, Sudip Basu, Amitava Chatterjee, and Joydeb Ghosh. They all expressed their excitement for yet another successful year of the Jamshedpur Book Fair.
